I'd say, it depends on the time you have for maintenance.  If you want
to just install it once and do infrequent updates, I'd say get a
released version (or track the 4.8 branch), you shouldn't have many
surprises there.  If you need/want the newer features, you can follow
trunk, but there's always the risk that it'll introduce bugs from time
to time :-)

  I'm not sure it was scheduled for 4.8… at any rate, it was made more
than one month after the 4.8 branch was started.  Since the branch was
well into its “fixes-only” phase, such a massive patch wouldn't have
been in its place on the branch.
