You know that Makefile and tools/update-gettext-files.sh both call 
utils/manage-translations.sh, do you?
(how about removing  tools/update-gettext-files.sh btw?)

Anyway I do know how gettext works, I'm just surprised to get this many 
line changes after only 3 days, so I checked if there was some 
non-standard use of the tools.
